Medicare Insurance Plans

Medicare is perhaps the most important component of health care planning in retirement.

Medicare.gov and Social Security.gov  are two excellent sources of information.

When you are 3 months away from turning 65, you are notified by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services) to begin the process of applying for Medicare Part A.

Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care.

Part B (Medical Insurance)

Helps cover the cost doctors, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical insurance & preventative services.

Part D (Drug Insurance)

Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines).

Original Medicare- Part A & Part B

  • Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B.
  • You can join a separate Medicare drug plan to get Medicare drug coverage (Part D).
  • You can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S.
  • To help pay your out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare (like your 20% Coinsurance), you can also buy supplemental coverage, like Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), or have coverage from a former employer or union, or Medicaid.

Medicare Advantage (also knows as Part C)

  • Medicare Advantage is a Medicare-approved plan from a private company that offers an alternative to Original Medicare for your health and drug coverage. These “bundled” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.
  • In most cases, you’ll need to use doctors who are in the plan’s network.
  • Plans may have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare.
  • Plans may offer some extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover — like vision, hearing, and dental services.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines). You join a Medicare drug plan in addition to Original Medicare, or you get it by joining a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage. Plans that offer Medicare drug coverage are run by private insurance companies that follow rules set by Medicare.

If you are a senior citizen, you are probably already aware of the benefits of Medicare. This government-sponsored health insurance program covers many medical expenses, but it does not cover everything.

That’s where Medicare supplement plans come in.  What is a Medicare Supplement plan?  This is a plan that reimburses your Medicare Parts A & B cost-shares, and provides some limited extra benefits above Original Medicare.

Benefits of Medicare

  • Lower Out-of-Pocket Costs. One of the most significant benefits of having a Medicare supplement plan is that it can help lower your out-of-pocket costs. Medicare only covers a portion of your medical expenses, and you are responsible for paying the rest. A Medicare supplement plan can help cover the expenses that Medicare does not cover, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
  • More Flexibility. With a Medicare supplement plan, you have more flexibility in choosing your healthcare providers. Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, which limit your choices to a network of providers, Medicare supplement plans allow you to choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.
  • Predictable Costs. Medicare supplement plans offer predictable costs, which can help you budget for your healthcare expenses. Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, which may have unpredictable costs depending on the services you use, Medicare supplement plans have consistent premiums and predictable out-of-pocket costs.
  • Peace of Mind. Finally, having a Medicare supplement plan can give you peace of mind knowing that you are protected against unexpected healthcare expenses. With a Medicare supplement plan, you can rest assured that you will be covered for the healthcare services you need, without worrying about the financial burden.

A Medicare supplement plan can be an excellent investment for seniors who want to protect their financial and physical health. With lower out-of-pocket costs, more flexibility, guaranteed coverage, predictable costs, and peace of mind, a Medicare supplement plan can help you feel confident and secure in your healthcare decisions.
